Each autumn Varanasi’s Ramnagar Ramlila transforms the city into a month-long living Ramayana, UNESCO-recognized for its oral heritage. Performances unfold across permanent sites without microphones, lit by petromax lamps, with audiences walking alongside revered child actors (swaroops) and devoted readers (nemis). Distinct neighbourhood lilas, notably Nati Imli and Chetganj, blend devotion, community roles, and political satire.
