Florida's warm, humid climate lets many ornamental garden plants escape into wetlands, forests and waterways, where they outcompete native species. Eight commonly planted species spread via seeds, runners, birds or tubers, forming dense mats and resprouting after removal. Their aggressive growth and regeneration make eradication costly and control difficult for homeowners and land managers.
